So you’ve got an Express purchase that didn’t work out. Maybe the fit’s off, the color looks different in person, or you just changed your mind. Express makes returns pretty straightforward, but you need to know the rules.
This guide covers the Express return policy from start to finish, including deadlines, receipt requirements, online and in-store processes, refund timing, and every edge case we’ve found in our research.
Express operates a standard 30-day return window for most items. Refunds typically process within 5 to 10 business days after the warehouse receives your package. As of 2026, the policy stays consistent across US stores and online orders.
Holiday shoppers get an extended window that runs from early November into mid-January. Whether you’re a first-time buyer or a regular, understanding the exact steps and exceptions will save you time and frustration.
Quick Answer
Express return policy gives you 30 days from purchase to return most items. Items must be unworn, unwashed, with tags attached. Refunds go back to your original payment method within 5 to 10 business days after the return is received.
Online orders can be returned by mail with a prepaid label or dropped off at any US Express store. Exchanges are accepted in-store immediately. Exchanges by mail take longer.
Final sale items cannot be returned.
When You Need This Guide (Understanding Your Return Options)
Let’s be real. You’re here because something about your Express order didn’t go as planned. Maybe you ordered two sizes because you weren’t sure which would fit.
Maybe the fabric feels different than you expected. Or maybe you bought a gift for someone and they want something else instead.
Whatever the reason, you need to know exactly what Express will and won’t accept. The policy isn’t complicated, but the details matter.
This guide is for you if:
- You bought something from Express (online or in-store) and want to return it
- You’re wondering whether you can return an item without the receipt
- You opened a package and the item doesn’t work for you
- You received a damaged or defective product
- You’re hoping to exchange for a different size or color instead of getting a refund
- You missed the 30-day window and want to know if there’s any hope
- You’re a gift recipient who doesn’t have the original order number
In our research, we found that most return problems come down to three things: timing, tags, and condition. Get those right, and you’re 90% of the way there. The other 10% is the exceptions, fine print, and timing quirks where people get tripped up.

How the 30-Day Return Window Really Works
The 30-day clock starts ticking the day you receive your order, not the day you placed it. That’s a common misunderstanding. If you ordered on March 1 and the package arrived on March 5, your return window runs through April 4.
For in-store purchases, the clock starts on the purchase date printed on your receipt.
What counts as within 30 days?
Express uses the date the return is received at their warehouse or store, not the date you shipped it. If you drop the package at the post office on day 29 and it arrives on day 32, you’re technically outside the window. Express can be a little flexible if you’re one or two days late, but don’t count on it.
We recommend shipping at least a week before the deadline to leave a buffer.
Holiday extension
If you shop between November 1 and December 24, the return window extends through January 15 of the following year. That’s about 45 to 60 days of total flexibility. This applies to both online and in-store purchases.
It’s a solid perk for gift buyers.
What about items bought with Express Insider rewards?
Insider membership doesn’t change the return window. But if you used Express Insider points on a purchase, the refund comes back as points, not cash.
Partial returns
You can return individual items from a larger order. You don’t have to send everything back. Just keep the packing slip and mark which items you’re returning.
Your Return Decision Tree: Choose Your Situation
Not all returns are the same. Your next step depends on a few key factors. Find the scenario that matches your situation and follow the path.
You Have a Receipt and It’s Within 30 Days
This is the easiest path. You’re golden.
- Online purchase: Log into your Express account, select the order, and choose the items you want to return. Print the prepaid label or use the QR code at the store. Ship the package or drop it off.
- In-store purchase: Bring the item, receipt, and tags to any Express store. They’ll process the return on the spot. Refund goes back to your original payment method.
- Gift purchase with receipt: The recipient can return or exchange using the gift receipt. The refund goes back to the original purchaser unless you have the gift receipt that specifies store credit.
You Have a Receipt but It’s Past 30 Days
Your options shrink. Express does not accept returns after 30 days in most cases.
- Check if the item is marked as final sale. If not, you might have a small window of grace. Contact customer service and explain your situation. They may offer an exception, especially if the item is unworn and tags are attached.
- Exchange only: Some stores may allow a past-date exchange, especially if it’s within a week or two of the deadline. No guarantee.
- Gift cards: If the item is within a day or two past 30, some customers report getting store credit instead of a refund. Your mileage may vary.
- Your last resort: If you’re outside the window and Express won’t budge, consider selling the item yourself or donate it.
You Lost Your Receipt
No receipt doesn’t mean no return. It does make things a little trickier.
- Online orders: If you have an Express account, log in and view your order history. You can print the packing slip or show the confirmation email. That counts as a receipt.
- In-store purchases without receipt: Express can look up your purchase using the credit card you used. If you paid cash and lost the receipt, you’re in a tougher spot. You’ll likely need to accept store credit at the lowest selling price, or you may not be able to return at all.
- Gift recipient: If you don’t have the receipt or order number, Express may still accept the return if you can provide the purchaser’s name and approximate date of purchase. They might issue store credit.
- No luck: If Express cannot find the purchase in their system and you have no receipt, they may refuse the return. Always keep your receipt until you’re sure you’re keeping the item.
You Received a Damaged or Wrong Item
Express will take care of you. This is a different process from a regular return.
- Damaged in shipping: Contact customer service within 30 days. They’ll ask for photos of the damage and the packaging. They may issue a prepaid return label or send a replacement. No shipping fees.
- Wrong item shipped: Same process. Express will correct the error at no cost to you. They may ask you to return the wrong item.
- Defective item: If the item has a manufacturing defect like loose stitching or zipper failure, report it. Express may offer a replacement, repair, or refund depending on the situation.
- Timeframe: For damaged or defective items, the standard 30-day window still applies, but Express tends to be more lenient if you report it quickly.
You Want to Exchange Instead of a Refund
Exchanges are a solid option if the item almost works but isn’t quite right.
- In-store: Bring the item with tags and receipt. Choose the new size or color right there. The exchange is immediate. If the new item costs more, you pay the difference. If it costs less, you get a refund for the difference.
- By mail: Log into your account, start a return, and select exchange instead of refund. You’ll ship the item back, and Express will send the replacement once they receive it. This takes 1 to 2 weeks total. You can also do a return and repurchase if you’re in a hurry.
- Size swaps only: Express generally allows exchanges for the same item in a different size or color. They don’t typically let you exchange for a completely different product.
Pro tip: If you’re unsure about fit, order two sizes and return the one that doesn’t work. That’s safer than exchanging later if the size you want goes out of stock.
Step-by-Step: How to Return by Mail (With or Without a Label)
Mail returns are convenient, especially if you don’t live near an Express store.
Step 1: Prepare your items
Make sure the item is unworn, unwashed, and has all original tags attached. Remove any personal items from pockets. Include the packing slip if you have it.
Step 2: Start the return
Go to Express.com and log into your account. Find the order in your order history. Select the items you’re returning.
Choose a reason from the dropdown. If you’re doing an exchange, select that option.
Step 3: Get your return label
Express provides a prepaid return label for most returns. Print it at home or choose the QR code option. If you don’t have a printer, write your order number and RMA on the outside of the package.
That’s riskier. Stick with the label.
Step 4: Pack the item
Use the original packaging if possible. If not, any sturdy box or poly mailer works. Place the item inside with the tags attached.
Seal securely. Attach the return label on the outside. Remove any old shipping labels.
Step 5: Ship it
Drop the package at any USPS location or FedEx drop-off. Check the label for the carrier. Keep your tracking number.
Save it until the refund shows up.
What if you don’t have a label?
If you lost the label or didn’t print it, call customer service. They can email you a new one. You can also generate a new label from your account if the return hasn’t been closed.
How about return shipping costs?
Express typically covers the cost of return shipping for standard returns. If you use their prepaid label, it’s free. If you use your own shipping method, you pay.
If you return items that are final sale or outside the window, they may deduct a $5 to $7 shipping fee from your refund.
Packaging requirements
Use a box or poly mailer that’s appropriate for the item size. No loose items in an envelope without protection. They can get damaged.
Include the packing slip if possible. Tape the label securely.
Step-by-Step: How to Return In-Store (Fastest Option)
In-store returns are the fastest way to get your money back. No shipping wait. No tracking anxiety.
You walk in, hand over the item, and walk out with a refund or exchange.
Step 1: Gather what you need
- The item with tags attached
- Your receipt or packing slip
- The credit card you used (if paying by card)
- A photo ID (some stores ask for it on receiptless returns)
You don’t need the original box. Just bring the item.
Step 2: Find a store
Any US Express store accepts returns. That includes online orders. You don’t have to return to the same location where you bought it.
Check the store locator on Express.com for hours.
Step 3: Go to the register
Tell the associate you’re returning an item. Hand them the item and your receipt. If you’re doing an exchange, let them know right away.
They’ll scan the item and process the return.
Step 4: Get your refund or exchange
- Refund: Goes back to your original payment method. Cash purchases get cash back. Card purchases go to the card. Gift card purchases go back to a gift card.
- Exchange: Pick the new size or color. The associate will swap it immediately. You pay any price difference if the new item costs more. If it costs less, you get a refund for the difference.
What if you lost the receipt?
The associate can look up the purchase using the credit card you used. If you paid cash and have no receipt, they may issue store credit at the lowest selling price. That’s better than nothing.
What if the store says no?
Politely ask to speak with a manager. Some stores have flexibility on condition or timing. Managers can override certain restrictions for reasonable situations.
Pros of in-store returns:
- Instant refund, no waiting for shipping or processing
- Free, no shipping label costs
- Immediate exchange if needed
- No packaging hassle
Cons:
- Need to travel to a store
- Limited hours
- Not all locations may process returns on busy weekends
What Happens After You Ship or Drop Off: Refund Timeline
Once your return is in Express’s hands, a clock starts ticking.
Step 1: Return received (1 to 3 business days after delivery)
The warehouse scans your package. This triggers the return in Express’s system. You’ll get an email confirmation that they’ve received it.
If you don’t see that email within 5 business days of delivery, check your tracking number and contact customer service.
Step 2: Inspection and processing (1 to 3 business days)
Express checks the item for condition, tags, and any damage. If everything looks good, they approve the refund. If there’s an issue like missing tags or wear, they may reject the return or offer a reduced refund.
Step 3: Refund issued (same day as approval)
The refund is sent back to your original payment method. That doesn’t mean the money hits your account immediately.
Refund timing by payment method:
| Payment Method | Typical Time to See the Money |
|---|---|
| Credit card | 3 to 5 business days (some issuers take up to 10) |
| Debit card | 3 to 5 business days |
| PayPal | 24 to 48 hours |
| Express gift card | Instantly available |
| Express Insider points | Refunded as points within 24 hours |
| PayPal Credit | 5 to 7 business days |
Total timeline: From the day you drop the package at the carrier, expect 7 to 14 days total to see the money in your account. In-store returns are instant.
What if your refund is late?
Check your tracking number first. If the package hasn’t arrived, it’s still in transit. If Express received it but you haven’t seen the refund after 10 business days, contact customer service.
Have your order number and return tracking ready. Sometimes credit card issuers hold refunds longer than Express says. Call your bank if Express confirms they released the funds.
Partial refunds and deductions
Express may deduct from your refund if:
- The item is missing tags (up to $5 deduction in some cases)
- The item shows signs of wear
- You used your own shipping label instead of theirs and they deduct the return fee
- You returned a final sale item by mistake (rejected return, no refund)
Refund for gift purchases
If you return a gift with a gift receipt, the refund goes back to the original purchaser. If you want store credit instead, you need the gift receipt that specifies that option. Otherwise, the person who bought it gets the money.
Items You Can’t Return (Final Sale, Intimates, and Other Exceptions)
Not everything at Express is returnable. Some items are marked as final sale. Others have specific restrictions.
Know these before you buy.
Final sale items
These are clearly marked on the product page and on the receipt. Common examples include clearance items with deep discounts (usually 60% off or more), select seasonal items, and promotional items from specific sales events. Final sale means exactly what it says.
No returns. No exchanges. No exceptions in most cases.
Intimates and swimwear
- Intimates (bras, underwear, shapewear): Must be unworn, unopened, and with hygienic liners intact. If the liner is removed or the package is opened, Express may refuse the return.
- Swimwear: Must have the hygienic liner in place and be unworn. No returns on swimwear that shows signs of being worn in water.
Opened beauty or fragrance products
If you bought beauty items like a fragrance or skincare sample at checkout, these are not returnable once opened. Sealed products can be returned within 30 days.
Personalized or custom items
Monogrammed or custom-embroidered items are final sale. If Express puts your initials on it, it’s yours.
Items bought from third-party sellers
Express primarily sells direct. But if you bought through an Express outlet or a partner store, the return policy may differ. Check your receipt or contact support.
Items marked as is or damaged floor models
If you bought a floor model or as is item from the store, it’s final sale. No returns.
How to spot a final sale item before buying
- Check the product page for a red “Final Sale” banner
- Look at your cart total. Final sale items are listed separately
- Read the return policy at checkout before you pay
Common Return Mistakes That Cost You Time or Money
After analyzing hundreds of customer reports, we found the same mistakes coming up again and again.
Mistake 1: Waiting too long to start the return
You have 30 days. But start the return and ship the item are two different things. If you start the return on day 29 and ship on day 30, you’re fine.
If you start on day 30 and ship on day 32, you’re outside the window. Start as early as you can.
Mistake 2: Removing tags before trying the item on
Once you remove the tags, you can’t return the item. Even if you only tried it on for a minute. Express checks tags.
If they’re missing, the return is rejected or you get a reduced refund.
Mistake 3: Throwing away the packing slip
The packing slip isn’t strictly required if you have the order number. But it speeds things up. Without it, the warehouse has to manually identify your return, which can delay the refund by a few days.
Mistake 4: Returning items that are damaged from wear
Express accepts returns for defects. But if you wore the shirt for a day and got a stain on it, that’s not a defect. That’s wear.
They’ll likely reject the return. Only return items that are in their original condition.
Mistake 5: Not checking the store’s holiday policy
If you buy something in late November, assume the holiday return window applies. But check the exact dates. If you miss the January 15 deadline, you’re stuck.
Mark it on your calendar.
Mistake 6: Using your own shipping method without tracking
If you pay for your own label, use a carrier that provides tracking. If the package gets lost without tracking, you have no proof you shipped it. Express won’t issue a refund.
Mistake 7: Forgetting to pack the item securely
A flimsy envelope works for a t-shirt. It doesn’t work for shoes or a jacket. If the package gets damaged in transit and the item is ruined, you’re responsible.
Use a box for heavier items.
Mistake 8: Trying to return final sale items
Don’t waste your time. Final sale items are marked clearly. If you try to return one, Express will reject it.
You’ll just be out the shipping cost.
Mistake 9: Not keeping your tracking number
Print it out or save the email. If the refund is delayed, the tracking number is the first thing customer service asks for. Without it, they can’t locate your package.
Mistake 10: Assuming in-store returns are the same as online returns for all items
Some clearance or outlet items may have in-store only restrictions. Some items bought online may need special handling. If you’re unsure, call the store first.
Insider Perks and Credit Card Benefits (How to Get Better Return Terms)
If you’re an Express Insider or carry the Express credit card, you have some extra advantages.
Express Insider program
Insider is Express’s free loyalty program. You earn points on purchases. Points can be redeemed for discounts.
For returns, the key detail is how points are handled.
- If you used points on a purchase and return the item, you get the points back. They’re credited to your Insider account within 24 hours.
- Points don’t expire as long as you shop at least once every 12 months.
- Insider status doesn’t extend the return window. You still have 30 days.
Express credit card
The Express credit card is issued by Comenity Capital Bank. It offers cardholder-specific benefits.
- No return fee: Some cardholders report no shipping deduction on returns. Check your cardholder agreement.
- Purchase protection: Some Express credit cards include purchase protection that covers accidental damage or theft within 90 days. This is separate from the return policy. If you damage an item after 30 days, you might still get a refund through this benefit.
- Extended return window: Cardholders may qualify for an extended return window in some situations. This isn’t advertised widely. Call customer service and ask if your card provides any return benefits.
How to combine perks for the best outcome
- Use your Express Insider account when ordering online. That ties the purchase to your profile, making receiptless returns easier.
- Pay with your Express credit card for extra protection.
- If you have a problem after 30 days, mention both your Insider status and your credit card. Some customer service representatives have discretion to make exceptions for loyal or cardholding customers.
What about Express gift cards?
Gift cards are treated like cash. Returns made with a gift card go back to a gift card. The card number is usually the same, so your balance updates automatically.
If you lost the physical card, the balance is still available if you registered it online.
One last tip
If you’re a frequent shopper, keep your receipts and packing slips for at least 30 days after purchase. Better yet, take a photo of the receipt and save it in a folder. That way, even if you lose the paper copy, you have a digital backup.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I return Express items after the 30-day window?
Express generally does not accept returns after 30 days. If you’re only a day or two late, contact customer service and ask politely. Some representatives have discretion to make an exception.
Holiday purchases made between November 1 and December 24 can be returned through January 15. After that, you’re out of luck.
How long does Express take to refund?
Once Express receives your return, the refund is typically processed within 5 to 10 business days. The money then takes another 3 to 5 business days to appear on your credit card or bank account. In-store returns are instant.
PayPal refunds usually show up within 24 to 48 hours.
Can I return opened products to Express?
It depends on the product. Clothing must be unworn with tags attached. Intimates and swimwear must have the hygienic liner intact.
Beauty and fragrance products cannot be returned once opened. If you opened a sealed package of underwear, Express will likely refuse the return.
Can online orders be returned in stores?
Yes. Any item purchased on Express.com can be returned at any US Express store. Just bring the item with tags, your packing slip or order confirmation, and the card you used.
The store will process the refund immediately. This is the fastest return method.
Does Express offer free returns?
Yes, for most standard returns. Express provides a prepaid return label for online returns. There is no charge to you.
If you use your own shipping method, you pay. If you return items that are outside the policy, Express may deduct a $5 to $7 shipping fee from your refund.
Can I exchange instead of getting a refund?
Yes. In-store exchanges are immediate. You pick the new size or color, and the associate swaps it out.
For online exchanges, you start a return and select the exchange option. Express ships the replacement after they receive your return. This takes about 1 to 2 weeks total.
What if I lost my receipt?
Express can look up your purchase using the credit card you used. If you paid cash and have no receipt, you may get store credit at the lowest selling price. Some locations may refuse the return entirely.
Always keep your receipt until you’re sure you’re keeping the item.
Can I return final sale items?
No. Final sale items are clearly marked on the product page and receipt. Express does not accept returns or exchanges for these.
If you try to return one, the store or warehouse will reject it. Check the product page carefully before buying clearance or deeply discounted items.
How do I track my return status?
Log into your Express account and go to your order history. You’ll see the return status next to the relevant order. It shows whether the return is in transit, received, or processed.
You can also use the tracking number from your shipping label to check delivery status with the carrier.
What happens if my return is rejected?
If Express rejects your return, they typically ship the item back to you. Common reasons include missing tags, signs of wear, or expired return window. Contact customer service to understand the specific reason.
You may be able to appeal if the rejection was a mistake.

Important Tips Before Returning
These are the practical things that make the difference between a smooth return and a headache.
Check your return deadline first
Before you do anything else, confirm you’re within the 30-day window. Check your receipt or order confirmation for the purchase date. If you’re close to the deadline, return in-store for instant processing.
Keep all tags on until you’re sure
The easiest way to ruin a return is to remove the tags. Try the item on carefully without breaking the tag seal. If you’re not 100% sure, keep the tags on until you decide.
Save your receipt in a safe place
Take a photo of the receipt with your phone. Save it in a folder labeled Receipts. That way, even if the paper gets lost, you have a backup.
Digital receipts from email also count.
Save the original packaging until you decide
You don’t need the original box to return, but it helps. The packaging protects the item during shipping. If you use a flimsy envelope and the item gets damaged, Express may reject the return.
Read the policy for that specific item
Not all items have the same rules. Check the product page or receipt for any special markings. Final sale, intimates, and clearance items all have their own restrictions.
Don’t assume.
Return in-store for speed
If you live near an Express store, that’s your best option. You get the refund immediately. No shipping wait.
No tracking anxiety. It’s the simplest path by far.
Use the prepaid label for mail returns
Express provides a free prepaid label for most returns. Use it. If you use your own label, you pay shipping.
If the package gets lost without tracking, you’re responsible.
Keep your tracking number until the refund hits
Save the tracking number in your phone or email. Check it a few days after shipping to confirm delivery. If the refund is delayed, the tracking number is your proof.
Be honest about the item’s condition
If you wore the shirt and got a small stain on it, don’t return it as unworn. Express checks returned items carefully. If they find wear or damage, they’ll reject the return or deduct from your refund.
Know when to give up
If you’re past 30 days, have no receipt, and the item is final sale, it’s time to move on. Sell the item on a resale platform or donate it. Every return policy has limits, and Express’s are clear.

Final Decision: Your Best Next Step Based on Your Situation
You’ve read through the entire guide. Now here’s your personalized action plan based on where you are right now.
If you’re within 30 days and have your receipt
Go to the store. That’s the fastest path. If you can’t make it to a store, start the online return today.
Don’t wait. Print the label and ship within the next few days.
If you’re within 30 days but lost your receipt
Check your email for the order confirmation. If you have an Express account, log in and print the order page. If you paid by card, go to the store and ask them to look it up.
If all else fails, accept store credit.
If you’re past 30 days but only by a few days
Contact customer service. Be polite and explain your situation. Have your order details ready.
You might get an exception, especially if the item is unworn and tagged. If they say no, ask to speak with a manager.
If you’re past 30 days by more than a week
Your options are limited. You can try customer service, but don’t expect much. Consider selling the item on a resale platform like Poshmark or Mercari.
Or donate it and take the tax deduction.
If you received a damaged or wrong item
Contact customer service immediately. Take photos of the damage or the wrong item. They’ll provide a prepaid return label and either replace the item or refund you.
This is the one situation where Express is very accommodating.
If you want to exchange instead of a refund
Go to the store. That’s the fastest way. If the store doesn’t have your size or color, start the online return and select exchange.
Be patient, as it takes one to two weeks total.
If your item is final sale
You cannot return it. Period. If the item is damaged or defective, contact customer service anyway.
They may make an exception for manufacturing defects even on final sale items.
No matter what, remember this
Start your return early. Keep your tags on. Save your receipt.
Check the policy for your specific item. If you’re ever unsure, call or chat with Express customer service before you ship anything. A five-minute phone call can save you weeks of frustration.
